Economic Development

Welcome to Economic Development

The M.D.’s Economic Development Team provides a full range of services related to:

  • Business Retention and Small Business Development
  • Business Growth Strategies and Programming (ongoing services, support and referrals for both existing and new businesses)
  • New Business/Industry Attraction (retail, commercial, community services, industrial, oil/gas field services and supply, etc.)
  • New Directions in Economic and Community Development (building a more diversified, value-added and “full service” economy and retail/commercial presence)

The Team is committed to working with businesses, entrepreneurs and investors to help grow the region’s retail, commercial, industrial and tourism and outdoor recreation base – and to ensure that this growth and economic development takes place in a fully sustainable manner.

Jobs, investment and increased local expenditure activity remain the three primary goals for the Department as it strives to build and help bring about a more diversified, value-added and "full service" economy within the region.

Framework for Mentorship Program

Do you have a Master’s Degree in Sociology, Public Administration or extensive experience with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS)? Are you interested in establishing the framework for a mentorship program to be executed in the MD of Opportunity No. 17?

The MD of Opportunity No. 17 is interested in obtaining a consultant to develop the framework for a mentorship program to be executed in the community! Our vision is for an all inclusive program that utilizes community resources and organizations/groups to enrich the lives of children, youth and even the adults and elders who participate in the program.

We have determined that Drayton Valley’s Aim for Success Mentorship Program is a great model in the province and that the group can be used as a resource in developing the framework. We are interested in combining this proven program with the framework provided in the Alberta Mentoring Partnership’s toolkits, specifically the Creating a Community-Based Mentoring Program Toolkit, Mentoring Indigenous Communities Toolkit and Strength Based Mentoring: Nurturing the Social-Emotional Development of Children and Youth Toolkit. The toolkits mentioned and additional research from Alberta Mentoring Partnership can be downloaded from https://albertamentors.ca/tools-research/. A package from Aim for Success can be obtained by email by contacting Votham Anastasiadis, Tourism and Economic Development Officer for the MD of Opportunity No. 17.

The consultant will be expected to develop the framework, which includes all research, recommendations, appropriate documents/permission sheets and interaction/engagement of relevant community stakeholders to ensure community support and co-operation. The pilot community will be Wabasca, Alberta.

The framework must be complete by December 31, 2018 in order to begin execution of the program in the first quarter of 2019.

Proposals from consultants will include:

  • Cover letter and/or overview referencing their understanding of the goals of this project
  • Resumes of key team members
  • Price quote inclusive of travel, GST and all other expenses the project will incur
  • Proposed methodology
  • Proposed evaluation of the program once executed
  • Execution schedule/schedule of milestones
  • Successful projects/research/initiatives completed in the MD of Opportunity No. 17 and surrounding areas
  • Relevant additional information
